Harris Methodist Erath County Brings Digital Mammography Technology to Stephenville|
STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Women getting a mammogram at Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital soon will be experiencing the latest in mammography technology.
Digital technology creates better images, particularly for younger women.
Starting Sept. 24, digital mammography will become the standard of care at Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital, particularly for younger women or those with dense breasts.
“We are thrilled to bring the latest technology to the women of Stephenville and Erath County,” HMEC President Christopher Leu said. “This is just another way that we’re investing in the health of the community we serve.”
Digital images make it easier to penetrate dense breast tissue and to create contrasts to better read the images.
“Mammography is the best tool in providing early breast cancer detection and digital is fast becoming the standard in breast imaging,” said Sarah Mangrum, R.T. (R)(M), who is lead mammographer at Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital. “Together we hope to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer one patient at a time.”
The National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the American College of Radiology recommend women 40 years old and older have annual mammograms. Women with dense breasts or under 50 years old are specifically encouraged to get a digital mammogram, according to breastcancer.org.
Patients will not notice a difference in the actual test, which still includes compressing the breast. Exams are offered by skilled, registered technologists in a relaxing, comfortable environment. Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital employs the only registered mammography and breast sonography technologist in the Stephenville area.
“Digital mammography provides an image where radiologists can manipulate the image to better decipher differences in breast tissue and the computer can magnify images,” said Dr. Nanette Evans, the radiology medical director at Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital. “Now, women can stay in Stephenville for this advanced technology.”
October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is just around the corner so now is a good time to schedule an appointment for a yearly mammogram. Most often, the hospital can schedule mammography appointments within 48 hours. For an appointment, please call 254-965-1236.
Physicians on the medical staff practice independently and are not employees or agents of the hospital.
